KELLY THOMAS BEAT TO DEATH BY COPS
The installation was constructed departing from the painting The Raft of the Medusa by Théodore Géricault. And emerges as an attempt to reinterpret the idea of the voyeur in contemporary times. It is interested in the question of how art negotiates with politics, history and social issues today.
The installation consists of the projection of a downloaded video from YouTube (screen 1), which shows the beating of Kelly Thomas by members of the Fullerton Police Department, from the Orange County, California (USA). Thomas was homeless and suffered from schizophrenia. The results of the beating led him to death five days later in the hospital.
Opposite to screen 1 is a webcam recording the observer.
Screen 2 is a real-time video streaming of the audience watching the first video. These recordings can be accessed on the following link https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QtJN06TcyHQ
This project was part of the exhibition Das Floß der Medusa, at the Kunsthalle am Hamburger Platz, Berlin.
